My Chinese New Year Dinner At Grand Imperial Restaurant

One week before Chinese New Year, I was invited to a "lou sang" dinner at Grand Imperial Restaurant at the Hartamas Shopping Centre in Sri Hartamas.

It was a 9-course dinner priced at RM1,088. There were ten of us and we started with the fresh salmon fish 'yee sang'.

OK, the green chillies are not supposed to be served with the 'yee sang', but it was placed there when I took the photo! LOL! The two white plates contain the raw salmon fish.

The above photo shows the 'yee sang' up close before we added in the fresh salmon fish.

After we added the salmon fish, I had no time to take photos as everyone started to use their long chopsticks to stir the 'yee sang'. As you know, stirring the 'yee sang' (or what we call 'lou sang') is considered auspicious and I would not want to miss out on the action! Haha!

See how long the pair of 'lou sang' chopsticks is compares to the normal chopsticks that we use to eat with!

Within minutes, this was what remained of the big plate of 'yee sang'.

Since I love 'yee sang' a lot, I guess I ate most of it! LOL!

After that delicious 'yee sang', came the shark's fin soup with crab meat and crab roe.

I wondered why it was orange in colour! This is my bowl of shark's fin soup.

Unlike shark's fin served in some restaurants, this one used genuine shark's fins. Can you see this big chunk of shark's fin? Yummy!

I know! I know! We are not supposed to be eating shark's fin right? But I was invited and this dish was already on the table. It would be pointless to reject it!

Next on the list was roasted whole smoked suckling pig. Now I know some of you don't eat pork, but this was really delicious! Sorry about that!

See that huge pig head on the plate? I kind of felt sorry for the pig actually!

But the meat dipped into a little of the sauce was scrumptious! And I have to say it went down very well with a glass of red wine, courtesy of my friend!

The next food on the menu turned out to be my favourite dish for the night! It was steamed garoupa fish with chop ginger and preserved bean paste.

The flesh was smooth and it was tasty! I love this dish a lot!!

After the fish, came the deep fried sea prawns with garlic, salt and pepper.

I found the prawns a little too salty. Did not really like this one!

Next was braised top shell fish with mushroom, dried oysters and 'fatt choy'.

I am never a fan of this type of dish but I guess it was healthier than all the fried prawns and roasted pig we had earlier!

Finally, it was time for fried glutinous rice with waxed meat. I was already quite full by then, but I could still take in some more, haha!

It was not bad although we could not finish it! So in the end, we had to 'ta pau' (take away) whatever remained on the plate.

After resting our stomachs for a while (giving our stomachs time to digest all those food!), we were served desserts. The first dessert was chilled mango puree with sago and pomelo.

It may not look very appetizing, but believe me, it was quite delicious! Can you see the slices of pomelo I scooped up?

The second dessert was steamed 'nian gao' and lotus paste pastries.

The steamed 'nian gao' with shredded coconut was nice.

The lotus paste pastries were not too bad either.

Overall, I would say the food here were quite good although slightly pricey, but I would definitely return for the steamed garoupa fish!

Before we left, I took a quick snap of the front entrance of this restaurant.

And just in case you would like to book for a Chinese New Year dinner there, here are the details.

For that price, I believe the food's well worth it isn't?

I enjoy yee sang only...for the raw salmon. Otherwise, I am not really into those sweet crunchy stuff.

Btw, that nian gao with coconut looked interesting. The version I am familiar with is fried nian gao with yam or sweet potatoes.

Restaurants should consider not serving sharks fin soup. Maybe there's a better alternative that reducing the numbers of shark species in the world?

another thing is that i also pity the little pigs, they are just maybe few days old, never have enjoyed their lives and now they are already being roasted on our dining table.. haiz!!

hmmm, the garoupa.. i would think it may look better if served in a whole instead of cut into pieces??

  13. [SK] said...

anyway, i know why the cook cut it into pieces.. so that each piece can absorb the ginger and preserved bean paste to the maximum, so they taste much better.. hehe!!

Would love 'yee sang' with lots & lots of pomelo especially semi sweet sour pomelo.

Sorry cannot understand how to taste shark fins it's sort of 'tasteless' & crunchy. I'm just as hopeless like the shark who knows only how to wallop. I gather most of the taste comes from the gravy itself?. Need to consult foodie foongpc on this.

Restaurants certainly know how to cater to the needs of their customers. Many Chinese restaurants in my city offered auspicious 8 or 9 course meal for Chinese New Year. Yours is truly different. I've never had any of those dishes. Of course I had nian guo but not with shredded coconut. We didn't dine out though. My parents are traditional...gotta cook and eat at home.

Hi Foong, first up...Happy New Year! Hope the new (Tiger) year started well for you.

Yee Sang looks nice in an equally nice lacquer dish. For some strange reason, the best Yee Sang dishes that I've tasted are always at hotel Chinese restaurants. It must have something to do with the freshness of the ingredients and the right portions of the sauces and condiments.

Tossing the Yee Sang is great fun esp with all the unusual and amusing requests. Neat chopsticks, those.

I agree with Bananaz that sharkfins are tasteless. It's the soup with the other ingredients that are flavourful. Still that soup with crab roe looks delicious. I enjoy this soup with a dash of vinegar. It enhances the taste IMO.

Instead of sharkfin soup, one great alternative is the chili hot and sour veg soup. You've got to try this at Mandarin Oriental. Yum!

yeah, poor little piglets! I also pity them! But already cooked and on the table, so eat lah! : )

At first, we also wondered why they cut up the fish! But like you said, the pieces of fish can absorb the ginger and bean paste better. And they were excellent!

Yeah, actually I also like prawns cooked on their own, otherwise you are just eating the taste of the sauce and not the prawns.

rose belle, never had any of these dishes? Oh, you must come to Malaysia and try them! Eat at home is good also, you get home cooked food, which I think is the best! : )

Yeah, price is expensive so better serve real stuffs! Haha! Yeah, poor piglets, but i like the dish - just once or twice a year is OK I guess.

happysurfer, happy CNY to you! It's a great start to Tiger year!

I guess you are right. The freshness of ingredients for yee sang do make a lot of difference!

I love tossing the yee sang! : )

I also love shark's fin soup with a dash of vinegar. Yummy!

Oh, I must try your recommended chili hot and sour veg soup at Mandarin Oriental! Is it available any time or only during CNY?

Yeah, we were quite surprised the fish did not came whole, but I guess they cut it up to better absorb the sauce.

I do not quite like prawns mixed with other stuffs actually, hence I didn't like this prawn dish.

Top shell fish? Er...actually I also don't know. Haha! It tastes quite OK though I'm not really into abalones and mushrooms. I like the broccoli though : )

Glad you like my new template. A new year needs a new look : )
