The Haunted Penang Hotel

Strange. They were all senior citizens.

That was what both Colin and I noticed. The waiters were all males and at least above the age of 50.

Just then, Aurora and Kye Li came to join us. Kye Li was not her usual self. She looked pale and tired.

“What happened to you? Didn’t have a good night sleep last night?” I asked her.

She shook her head. We were seated by the window and the sunshine shining through seemed to trouble her.

“I didn’t sleep much last night. I had a very bad nightmare.” Kye Li said.

“Very horrible. I think she’s still shaking.” Aurora chipped in.

“That bad? Tell us about it!” Colin said.

“I don’t know….” Kye Li struggled to explain. “I don’t know if it’s a dream. It was so real!”

We reached Penang just the day before and had booked into this hotel along Penang Road. I and Colin shared a room, while the girls stayed in another room which was directly opposite the room next to ours.

After a tiring day walking around Georgetown, we went for dinner and then came back to the hotel to retire for the night. I went over to the girls’ room and chit chat for a while before going back to my room to sleep. There was no indication to prepare me for what would happen the following day.

As we ate our breakfasts, Kye Li slowly described what happened last night.

“I was talking to Aurora. We were both in bed. I think it was about 12.30am. I could see that Aurora was tired and wanted to sleep. I knew I should stop chatting with her and let her sleep. But somehow, I was not that sleepy.

But as I continued to talk, I realized she was about to doze off. I was starting to feel drowsy myself. Then I awoke with a start. I didn’t know if I imagined it, but I heard it! The water running in the bathroom as if someone was taking a shower.

I quickly sat up and shook Aurora to wake her up. I told her what I heard, so we just sat still for a while to listen. We heard nothing then, but we decided to check out the bathroom anyway. We had left the bathroom lights on, so we just opened the door and went in slowly to look.

Nothing. Shower was not turned on, no water running from the taps. Aurora said either I imagined it or what I heard was from the room next door. I was thinking, maybe that’s it! Anyway, we went back to bed after that.

I was chatting with Aurora for some time before starting to feel drowsy again. I think Aurora already slept – I was not sure – I was drifting into sleep. And then I awoke with a start! I saw several men in suits surrounding my bed. They started to pull me up from bed. I screamed. I saw Aurora still asleep next to me. I called her but she did not wake up. The men held my hands and legs and pulled me out from my bed, but somehow I struggled and struggled, screaming out for Aurora to wake up and help me.

Then I woke up. Aurora was sitting beside me. She said I was screaming like a mad person. I looked around. There were no men in suits. But everything else in the room was exactly the same as in my dream – every single detail including the box of tissue on the table beside my bed. And the clothes I placed on the chair. The details were exactly the same. I could not believe it was a dream!”

“She thinks the room is haunted.” Aurora said.

“Really?” I said. “It could just be a nightmare.”

“But it’s so real! I can even remember some of the faces of the men. One was very hideous. I remember his face very well. Oh, it’s so scary!” Kye Li said, trembling.

“Maybe you all should move out of the room.” Colin suggested.

“No!” Aurora shouted.

We all looked at her. “Why not?” Colin asked.

“I like the room!” I could hardly believe she said that.

“Besides,” she continued, “I think she’s just having a nightmare.”

Later that day, we searched for a temple and brought Kye Li there. I don’t remember the location of this temple, but we got Kye Li a talisman or ‘fu’ in Chinese.

Kye Li had almost forgotten her ordeal by the time we went back to the hotel to sleep that night. I was thinking, maybe with the talisman she felt much safer and was not worried anymore.

Boy, was I wrong! Both Colin and I were fast asleep when someone banged on our door. I quickly got up to my feet and asked who’s there. It was Kye Li. I quickly opened the door. She was crying.

“What happened?” I asked. Colin was by now behind me.

“Aurora. She…..she….” Kye Li stammered.

“What happened to her?” Colin asked.

Without waiting for her response, Colin and I stormed into her room. What I saw gave me the chills. Aurora was not on her bed. Instead, she was on the ceiling. Somehow, she was clinging to the ceiling, with her head tilted backwards and her long hair flowing downwards as she faced us.

I froze. Never in my life have I felt such horror. Colin gasped.

Aurora gave a crackling laughter as she moved towards us, her head tilted sideways as she looked at us. I backed out of the door in complete shock. But my legs gave way. I fell.

Then I woke up.

I could feel my heart beating fast and I was sweating. Colin looked at me and said, “You looked as if you have seen a ghost!”

I squinted as the sunlight from the window entered my eyes. I looked around the room. The dream was so real!

I then looked at Colin and said, “You know what, Colin?”

“What?” Colin frowned.

“We are changing room!”

“You are kidding me!” Colin protested.

“We are changing room right now!” I woke up from the bed and started to take my belongings and placed them in my luggage.

“Please don’t tell me you are having the same nightmare as Kye Li.” Colin teased.

“No, not the same. We are not having nightmares.”

“You mean this room is haunted? Is that what you mean?”

“Look Colin, are you packing your things or not? I am getting out of this room!” I almost shouted.

Colin noticed I was serious and quickly packed his stuff. As we went out of the room, the girls overheard the commotion and came out of their room.

“What happened?” Kye Li asked.

“This guy say we are going to request for a change of room!” Colin said pointing to me.

“Oh my God!” Kye Li trembled. “You experienced it too, Foong?”

“Yes, my God, yes! I was scared as hell! We shouldn’t have switched room with you girls last night!”

Note: This is a true story, except that we did not switch rooms. My friends Kye Li and Aurora requested for a change of room the day after Kye Li had her nightmare. At one point, Colin did suggest we switch room but I was too 'scaredy-cat' to go along with that idea! We did go to the temple to get Kye Li a talisman. But she insisted on changing room even with the talisman protection.

I just made up the rest of the story to spice things up. As to whether the hotel room was really haunted, we had no way of knowing but until now, Kye Li still believe it is haunted.

I am not going to mention the name of this hotel, except that from my hotel room, I can see the sea and E&O Hotel. I have changed the names of my friends to protect their privacy.

I rarely had nightmares but I still remember the one I had when I was a child. Very scary! If I experience any unnatural occurences in a hotel room, you bet I'll ask to be moved to another room. HEck, I'll even sleep in a conference room if they don't have any available. I like to watch the Ghosthunters show on the Sci-Fi network. Do you get American cable shows over there just like in the Philippines?

Penang is my hometown and ghosts in hotels is nothing new. In fact there are ghosts inside many rooms I have stayed in Singapore, Thailand and the worst was in Beijing where the old dead waiter walked out of my bathroom while I was watching TV at night. Normally the last rooms along the corridor is a favourite gathering place for the invisible guests. Last year I had no choice but to sleep in the last room of a hotel at Bencoolen Street, Singapore and the ghosts were having a big party inside. They said that I occupied the physical room whereas they only occupied the air space. So what the heck? I said prayers and sprinkled holy powder before I slept peacefully. Read my old post about the hotel at Gurney Drive - http://twilightzone518.blogspot.com/2008/08/ghost-in-hotel-room.html

    Wow!! Scary!!

When I was up in Penang for a business trip, I was staying in a room by myself and all night long, I could hear some folks outside my door just chatting away very loudly.

I was too tired to go and check it out and just left it as that.

When I got back, some friend told me that the hotel I stayed in was haunted.

It seems that Penang hotels are frequently haunted and that if you know some folks at the front desk, they will put you on a floor which is ok. Otherwise, it depends on your luck.

Well, every hotel have their haunted stories to tell.. I can't see, or smell... but I do hear them. Eventually of course I hope I don't see them hehehe :P.

Just tell them you're not there to conquer their space and that you're not harming them and you will be gone soon. Well, I don't know but usually works for me. I hear them, tell them I am not disturbing their peace and I hope they don't disturb my... the sounds goes away. Of course, if i get into such a dream... heck, I would change room too.

Thanks for a great story... hope I can avoid the hotel one day. I am not really interested in encountering with them.

nic, oh I like 'The Shining' by Stephen King - really good story! Hotels are indeed scary place to be cos a lot of people like to commit suicides in there. Furthermore, some hotels do not have enough 'yang' energy thereby attracting all sorts of spirits and ghosts to reside in them.

andy, thanks! Glad you were entertained by my ghost story! I guess it's more scary when it is based on actual events.

I've already given a number of hints - 1)the waiters are all males above 50 years old, 2)the hotel is on Penang Road, 3)from my hotel room I can see the sea and the Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O Hotel) quite close by : )

annant, you have similar dreams before? Where? When? I think the dream my friend had is a little unusual as she is not prone to such nightmares. Maybe it was triggered by the sound of shower running in the bathroom before she slept?

Btw, even today she tell me she swear what she heard from the bathroom is real and not imagined. I don't know lah, if I hear it myself, I will surely pack my bags and leave the room as fast as possible! Or just leave without packing my bags! LOL!

Oh, salt can prevent such things? So must remind myself to carry a bag of salt next time I travel! And what do you do with salt? Spread it all around the corner of the hotel room?

molly, oh don't let my ghost story and other ghost stories stop you from traveling! I think as long as you stay in a hotel that is not too run down, and a room that is not at the far end corner, I think chances of encountering these things are quite remote.

And of course, don't ever stay at hotels that are already famous for their ghost stories, eg. Ria Apartment in Genting Highlands. That one is 100% sure haunted! : )

babette, haha! Even willing to sleep at the conference room or maybe the hotel lobby? I think I will too! Better to sleep there than sleep with the ghosts inside the room! LOL!

I think I will put my luggage and whatever stuffs I have on that empty bed!! Maybe that will solve it - I hope!

Or can I just sleep inside your room? If there's space, I don't mind sleeping on the floor! Haha!

angie tan, don't tell me that what you heard about some folks talking loudly outside your room are actually ghosts? So scary!

Yes, I heard that the front desk will always help to put you on a good floor. That's why they said never to check into a hotel when it's almost fully occupied cos the remaining rooms are usually the haunted ones.

And if you insist even though they tell you the hotel is fully occupied, they will have no choice but to place you inside the haunted room! So never insist on a room if the hotel is already full : )

A friend who is familiar with such things advised that before you go to bed (hotel beds), place your shoes beside your bed, each facing a different direction. Placing one's underwear at the head of the bed helps too. Sleeping in the nude also helps. If you do any of these, you will not be disturbed.

I normally do the shoe ritual, sometimes, with two pairs of shoes, one pair on one side of the bed. It's worked fine. My roommate once experienced it while I slept like a baby the entire duration of our stay. My roommate saw it on the first night and her pullover was taken off on the last night of our stay. We were in a suite of a 5-star hotel in Auckland, NZ. Which goes to show that mat salleh land also got wan!

I remember receiving an email of the do's and don'ts of hotel stay. One of them is if you are staying in a room with two beds (as you mentioned should you be having a room to yourself in Guilin, Foong), do not leave the other bed empty. Put your bags and things there. Two others I can remember are:

    - Before you enter the room, knock on the door (so as to give a warning that you are entering so that it/they can get out of the way should it/they be inside.

    - If at all you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason, the hotel will not hesitate to give you a different room upon your request.

All said, not everyone is able to see or sense them, so enjoy your holiday. But do remember to do the shoe ritual. It has worked for me. Still. Plenty to gain in trying.

Hmm.. I wonder which hotel is this..
I stayed in one Penang Hotel before. I checked in early morning.. Went into the room to get ready for bed when there was a noise at the window.

A noise as if somebody's fingers running down the window.. We ignored it and the next day my friend who was in the next room told me she saw a big white figure flying across that night.

p/s: My hotel is facing the sea also..

ref the room, if my guess is correct, it likes like an ideal candidate for such stories but it would also the first time i heard stories from that place.

my sales area covered Penang, Kedah n Perak at one time.

cashmere, gosh! That's scary! Reminds me of those vampires trying to get into the house through the window in the movie Salem's Lot.

What do you believe? Ghost or maybe just the wind?

bengbeng, actually that room does not look like a haunted room to me. I've been to rooms which give me a bad feeling and makes my hair stand, but not this particular room which my friend stayed in.

Wah, can start your own Malaysia Ghost Stories book already...I think I know which hotel you are referring to.

I've 'met' the 'unfriendly' unseen residents in the ladies toilet of the hotel too. They just seem to LOVE flushing the toilet and turning on and off the taps while you are in there ALONE. Don't know about men's toilet though.

But I am not really bothered. I've had worst experiences. Hmmm..maybe I should start a real ghost stories blog eh?

And I know I'll probably get loads of old shoes thrown at me for saying this, some of those talisman you get from temples don't work.
Trust me, I know from experience.

It is more reliable to have strong faith in your religion and pray to your God for help. It works way better than any human-made talisman.

they are nice spirits lah, I think (the one in my home, that is). Came and "visited" me one night while I slept in Raimie's room. There were two of them, one male and one female dressed in all white and they beckoned me outside to have a "talk". When I regaled this to Zaini, he told me that he actually experienced the same thing albeit a group of those "spirits" reciting verses in our living room!
I had to think positive lah - maybe they were looking after our house. :)

Being a traveller, I've also been disturbed a few times. The times we cld be disturbed is when our spiritual luck is low, thus enabling the "yin" forces to override. (generally the human "yang" force prevails over spirits "yin" force). Talisman may or may not work, depends on which force is stronger.

When at hotels, I take few precautions, namely 1) do not take room opposite the lift nor the last room down the corridor, 2) do not insist on a room if told that hotel is fully booked. The reception may be "forced" to give you the room normally known to be eerie. 3) ask for change in room if you feel uncomfy the moment you step inside.

Geez, I do sound like a fengshuiman or something huh? LOLZ

Hmm...There is a proven haunted room at the Penang hotel around town area. Because two of my friends (who doesn't know each other) coincidence stayed at the same room and told me the "SAME" story after they back to JB.
Maybe this is common in Penang?!
And I suspect the hotel Foong and friends stayed might be the same as my friends stayed before....

um. wow. my mom and aunt used to be air hostesses in PIA, and theyve both told me stories about a haunted hotel in bangkok. My aunt had the same experience with the water taps and showers in her room the first time she went there. the second time, she got a room on a different floor, and this time she was engaged to a steward in the same airline, who was in the same hotel at the time. So, when she heard the door knocking, she assumed it was her fiance. But when she opened the door, there was no one there. And this happened the entire night. After a fee more encounters like this, the PIA crew did some investigation into the hotel and found out that it used to be part of some king's royal vacationing spot, and that during some revolution, all the royal guests and king's relatives were held hostage and murdered there. Hence the hauntings to this day.

In 2008, I stayed at the G Hotel in Penang for a weekend with my girlfriend and three other friends of ours stayed in the next room to us. I went out for an hour shopping and my friend stayed to nap in our room. When I came back she said that she felt as if there was someone in the room and didn't want me to leave. I felt fine but those two nights there but had weird dreams and a hard time sleeping through the night. When we viewed our photo's taken from the room, most of the photo's had multiple orbs in them.
