Is Homosexuality A Choice?

I know of someone whose teenage daughter is a lesbian. Not that this is a big deal in this day and age, but I later learnt that she does not really want to be a lesbian. She is just being a lesbian because she thinks it is trendy! Can you believe it?

Well, blame it all on Lindsay Lohan and some other Hollywood actresses who practise lesbianism!

Lindsay Lohan

However, I believe most gays and lesbians did not become who they are because it is trendy. They are born with a different sexual orientation. In other words, they did not have a choice in their sexual preference.

Some critics say that homosexuals are a result of upbringing and environment. They theorised that a boy became gay because his father was cold and emotionally detached. Or a girl became a lesbian because she had an aggressive mother. But this theory is neither correct nor proven.

According to the book 'Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps' by Allan and Barbara Pease, there were a lot or research done that concluded that homosexuals are born and not conditioned.

Scientists have already confirmed that the basic template for the body and brain of a human foetus is female in structure. That's why men have redundant female features like nipples and have mammary glands that do not function. In other words, we all started as females.

But 6 to 8 weeks after conception, a male foetus receives a massive dose of male hormones called androgens which help form his testes. Later, he receives a second dose which alter his brain from a female to a male configuration.

Now, if during that time, the male foetus did not receive enough androgens due to some reasons, he may be born with a more feminine brain structure, and is therefore likely to be gay by puberty.

Or he may be born with with a fully feminine brain structure yet still have the male genitals. In this case, he's likely to be a transgender, which means biologically, he's male but feel as if he's a female inside.

Even worse are some children who are born with both male and female genitals. They are sometimes born and raised as girls only to become boys at puberty. Their parents were shocked that their little girls had turned into boys! This change occured despite all the social conditioning and upbringing, which proves that social environment and upbringing had little to do with one's sexual orientation.

The important question is how does the male hormone, androgens get suppressed? Well, there are several causes among them, severe stress, sickness and certain medications will reduce the production of this male hormone.

So if during the early stage of pregnancy, the male hormone is suppressed, and the foetus is male, the chances of giving birth to a gay boy are high.

However, if the foetus is female, then the likelihood is that the girl will be a very feminine girl.

It is interesting to note that certain medications like contraceptive pills and diabetic drugs actually dose the body with male hormones like testosterone. This overdosing of male hormones is the cause of the female foetus turning into a lesbian girl!

It is for this reason that you find more homosexual guys than girls. This is because the chances of the foetus not receiving enough male hormone is higher than an overdose.

So pregnant mothers, do be careful of the medication you take! And manage your stress well if you want straight boys!

Poor Fab Five! Apparently, they did not receive enough androgens while in their mommies' wombs.

After having read this, what do you think? Do you still believe homosexuality is a result of social environment and upbringing? Or do you believe that one's sexual orientation is already fixed at birth, in other words, one has no choice in the matter?

If one really has no choice in the matter, isn't it unfair that gays and lesbians are treated with so much hostility, prejudice and discrimination in some parts of the world?

It's like you are shunned because you have blue eyes, or red hair, or you are left handed or dyslexic.

Sometimes, I wonder if it really is a choice, why would any intelligent person choose a way of life that exposes them to so much hostility, prejudice and discrimination? Isn't it so much easier to be straight?

Too many scientific studies done, way too many findings and conclusions.

Personally, I do believe it's not all genetic, coz environmental factors can severely affect our mindsets and behavorial tendencies too.

There a comment that i read fm somewhere which stuck to my mind..... "Never discriminate, coz you'll never expect that your loved-one, even perhaps your offspring, could be gay too!"

    Nice post dude! ^_^

Perhaps both birth condition and upbringing have a role in shaping a person's sexual orientation. We still need more research. It is too early to draw conclusion.

    Regarding Tekkaus' comment:
"And they choose to be what they are right now."

I think what the guys mean are they have 2 options:
    (A) marry a woman, but deep inside his heart he still loves another man
    (B) live together with a man whom he loves

In the end they choose (B).

I think I can accept gays or lesbians, but I still find it hard to accept people with both genitals. Otherwise, I think even if it's by choice or if they're born with it, we shouldn't treat gays any differently. Their sexual preference is totally their own choice, not for us to judge.

iamthewitch, actually I have yet to meet anyone who have both genitals. But I will not judge them. Or we might be one in our next life! : )

i believe that are many factors can affect one's sexuality and inclination, my friend's daughter became a les, like you said, she thought it was cool(can attract attention from the passerbys), another good friend of mine,a gay, which according to him, since he was a small boy,he just loved man, but i suspect that something went wrong during his boyhood(he never admit though)

My take is parents have to be open to their children when they are curious about their sexuality, please dont feed them non sense analogy.

selba, well, I guess if that celebrity is not a true gay, then he can change back to straight because originally, he's a straight.

Or maybe he changed to a religion that forbid homosexuality and he had no choice but to force himself to be straight, which of course won't cure him of his homosexuality, but will just make him suffer internally.

Or a third possibility is, he's bisexual. In which case, he can change to straight at any time : )

eugene, I agree there are many factors involved, but in my opinion, I still think homosexuality is fixed at birth. The reason is many gays have undergone all sorts of therapies to cure their homosexuality without real success. These includes drug therapy, frontal lobotomy, psychotherapy, electric shock therapy, prayers, and spiritual counselling.

I do agree that parents should be open to their children when they start getting curious about their sexuality. I think there's a phase in a teenager's life when he/she gets attracted to the person of the same sex, but this is just a temporary thing.

However, if the teenager concerned do not get proper guidance, he/she may think he/she is gay, which is not the case.

Interesting about the template. Oh dear, what will happen to the X and Y chromosome theory?

I wouldn't entirely agree that it's purely genetics because the environment one is in can be a contributary factor, and being trendy hardly comes into play, I should think.

I think being gay or the choice of being one takes a lot of thinking and conflicts within:

    - you have to be passionate enough to go for it,
    - you need a lot of courage to be on the "other side" as it involves the possibility of being ridiculed or shunned,
    - you have to be true to yourself and not live a lie and be miserable your whole life,
    - etc.

Not only guys, gay ladies too can live a double-life - bisexual. They can get married (just to put up a conventional facade) and keep company with their true love(s) at the same time. We live in wonderful times of equality!

Whatever it is, anyone's sexual orientation is his/her business just like any heterosexual's. No one is more or less worthy because of his/her sexual orientation.

Personally, I feel that gay people are more sensitive (on the positive side) and more loving. No?

    Great post, Foong!

It is true. In biology, I learnt that the reason for homosexuals is due to the mutation of the genes. So it's not anyone's fault. The society has to accept it. but some chose to be gay and since it's their choice, we should not discrimate them. I can swing both sides but I still prefer a man!

    March 25, 2009 at 3:42 PM
  30. foongpc said...

Yes, I totally agree with you that we should respect biology and people's choice whether they want to be gay or straight. It's all personal preference like, whether you want your hair long or short, or black or blond.

I think there are a lot of people out there who can swing both sides but prefer the opposite sex. Celebrities like Madonna is a case in point : )

Response to this message (rad, I don't think it's nice to ask someone whether he/she is straight or gay. Because of discrimination, judgment and prejudice against homosexuals, people are likely to lie to you and say they are straight. Unless they know you are gay as well.

There are a lot of gays who are not 'out' yet and they keep their homosexuality in the closet. Don't be surprised if your close friend turn out to be gay - you just never know! Just like you were so surprised that pretty Lindsay Lohan is a lesbian!

As for me, I am straight. But would you really trust my words? Cos I can be gay but say I'm straight. Or I can be bisexual for that matter : )

That's what I mean. If someone can't start from themselves to not be discriminated why should they lie about themselves? They already discriminate themselves at the first place.

Yea... I still can't believe my Lindsay is gay :((

There are penalties such as jail even death for breaking the law in this country, but people commit crimes anyway. it is a choice they make despite knowing the consequences.

Yes homosexuals that are out in the open are subjected to redicule, but to use that as an example as to why they are born that way is simply absurd!

Men commit adultry with full awareness of the consequences if they get caught, should we say then that men are born adulters? Or is it a choice that they make?

anonymous, you mean to tell me that gays are made, not born? Well, this is a controversial topic open to discussion but I am just referring to the book "Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps" by Allan & Barbara Pease.

But in my opinion, if gays have a choice to be straight and they choose to be gay, aren't they stupid because they would get ridiculed and discriminated by society?

Also, how do you explain animals which are "gay"? Do they also choose to be gay?

I'm a Marxist, so I argue that homophobia began at the birth of capitalism, around 1790.

Homophobia is used to oppress the working class, to make gays and straights hate each other.
Gays feel scared to be true when expressing themselves; straights are constantly worried about not being 'manly enough' or 'womanly enough' to be accepted as normal in society.

Notice how in Ancient Greece: there was no working class; all labour was done by slaves.
This meant that there was no need for homophobia to exists - and it didn't!

All documented homohobia began during the 1700s and 1800s.

(Since is of course, the Marxist point of view. Other people, such as liberals and leftists, argue that it is religion that has caused homophobia, which means it's 3000 years old. Conservatives, on the other hand, argue that homophobia is 'human nature'.)

Two more things. Why must society label someone 'gay' or 'straight'? Once a label is given, social rules of acceptance come into it, stereotypes. Black people act X; lesbians act Y; white gay men act Z.
Labels are wrong because they limit our potentials as human beings.

Finally: I believe in the 'consenting adults' theory. For as long as romantic relationships and sexual relationship involve 'constenting adults', then there should be absolutely no rules about how they can act.
They should be allowed to have absolute freedom to experience the joys of being human and being alive.

I honestly never met a gay guy that said he was gay by "choice" by any means. Perhaps thats because I live in the midwest though, and I couldn't see a kid wanting that kind of negative attention here ... but I do think it is a broader statement in general. Now, I am not going to say that being gay is all genetic (or even all prenatal, with the hormonal effects), but I do think it is determined quite early on. And not only that, I think the attractions are pretty life-long solid well before puberty hits (for guys at least ... who are more visual-orientated creatures to begin with). There are a lot of things that are both genetic and environmental, like your adult height ... but that surely doesn't make those things a 'choice' or 'changable' really. A gay man's brain is about as even physically different as a straight man's to a straight woman's ... and that structure just doesn't change. I don't think its suprising then the reliability of ones orientation (especially if at the far spectrum of homosexual or heterosexual attractions).

eBay or other comparable auction websites are great places to find amazing deals on your favorite Coach Outlet
and handbags. It is important to note, though, that there are some shady sellers out there that can't be trusted. Those who know will tell you that there are numerous sellers out there trying to sell Coach Wristlet
    to unwary clients.
Please do not let yourself be one of those that are fooled by these Coach Ergo
. Fortunately, there are several ways to effortlessly spot knockoffs. If you know what to look for, you will be able to spot a fake every time.
Watch out for any one who has a bunch of the same bag for sale There are sites that sell the phony Coach Poppy
for a discount in high volume and dishonest sellers often buy from these places so they have many of the same purses.

With all the studies and considering natural laws of nature I am surprised taht homosexuality has not been identified as a sexual development disorder, albeit a complex one. any other condition that affects the developing foetus is considered a developmental disorder. With this in mind, this condition can exist on a continuum, like other disorders, and be individual. It is well documented taht hormonal influences affect the deveping foetus and so when the hormonal levels are not balanced the foetus does not develop as it is supposed to. some may be born with a tendency for homosexuality and then was brought on line due to circumstances like in the home or through abuse.

Even after all this research, it is still a choice to BEHAVE homosexually or not. Just because someone is born into sin and has a defect doesn't mean they can't rise above their sinful, lustful, homosexual urges and desires. God's Word says homosexuality is a sin, therefore BEHAVING homosexually is a sin. I capitalized the word "behave" to emphasize it is not a sin to be tempted. It is only a sin to act on those temptations. For example, if someone makes me mad and I am tempted to insult them, hit them, etc., but don't, have I sinned? No, I have not. Just because Satan tempts me, it doesn't mean I have sinned. But if I listen to the devil and fall into temptation and cuss someone out or harm them, then I have sinned. To draw this into the point I am trying to make, yes, someone may be born with certain sexual tendencies, but that does not mean they have to act on them. Being tempted to commit homosexual acts is not a sin. Actually committing homosexual acts, however, is.
