Do You Support Earth Hour?

Malaysia will be having its very first Earth Hour tomorrow 28th March at 8.30pm.

A lot of bloggers have already blogged about this Earth Hour and most have expressed support for this event.

Now it's my turn.

I noticed not every country is supporting this Earth Hour. India is one of them. I wonder why.

I decided to go around asking my friends and their friends to find out what they think about this event. Here are some of the responses which were quite shocking to me.

"Earth Hour? What's that?"

"Oh yes, I know you are supposed to switch off your lights. That I can do, but don't ask me to switch off my air conditioner - it's so damn hot these days!"

"What? Switch off my TV too? I will miss my favourite TV show!"

"Aiya! Don't ask me to switch off my computer lah. I can switch off everything except my computer!"

"Switch off lights? Then do what? Go to sleep so early meh?"

"No fan, no air con? You want me to die ah, those mosquitoes will kill me!"

"Eh, very dangerous! If everyone switch off lights, thieves and robbers will make a killing!"

"I don't support. This is all a waste of time! What is one hour going to do to help the earth?"

"Tenaga Nasional will lose big if everyone practises Earth Hour! I don't think they will agree to this!"

"Crap! What global warming? There is no global warming! As if turning off lights for one measly hour can solve the problem which is not there in the first place!"

"Yeah, people are so silly, they think that if they switch off lights for one hour, they are contributing to saving the world from global warming. Then after that one hour, they switch on all the lights and waste electricity like there's no tomorrow."

"What nonsense! Do you know how much carbon is burnt for this Earth Hour campaign? Earth Hour is a joke!"

What about you? Are you for or against Earth Hour?

There are some anti-Earth Hour supporters out there who are campaigning to switch on every light and every electrical equipment they can get their hands on during Earth Hour as a sign of protest.

These people say that Earth Hour is a big hype and a waste of time. They think that for it to be effective, this habit of turning off lights should be done daily, or at least once a week. Not just a one day event.

In my opinion, although it is true that switching off lights for one hour won't do much to reduce carbon footprints and conserve energy, the main purpose of this Earth Hour is to create environmental awareness and also serve as a symbol of the fight against global warming. It is through awareness that real concrete action are able to take place. Do you agree?

I heard that a lot of buildings in KL will be joining in this event, like Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, Sultan Abdul Samad Building and MidValley Megamall among some of them. So maybe it will be a good idea to go out that night and watch these buildings turn off their lights just for fun!

So will you support Earth Hour and do something for Mother Earth? If yes, do visit this website and sign up to support this event!

PS: I just asked a friend if she supports Earth Hour a few minutes ago. Her response was amusing. "No, I can't switch off all the lights! I'm afraid of ghosts!"

I agree will not be not much impact from that one hour but this event creates some sort of awareness that perhaps ppl may consider in their daily living.

Publicity stunt or not..I don't know.

Yeah, one hour don't help the earth much, But this event let us all understand how important to protect the earth. So I support it!

And it let us know wasting electric power is not only money things, but also big harm to the earth.

While I agree that Earth Hour is to create awareness, I probably can't switch off the light at that time. I still need to do my MBA homework :(

Actually Earth Hour is more for commercial organizations, not so much for individuals like us.

As far as individuals are concerned, I always advocate:
Sleep early and wake up early.

And yes, I usually go to bed by 11.30pm, with lights off.

Do you know why some countries have daylight saving time?

I agree that Earth Hour is to make people aware of what is happening to our planet and the little that we do each day may help.

Anyway, long before TNB raised the tariff, my family has practiced turning off non-essential lights already. Sometimes, when I step out of my room, the entire house is already in darkness because all of us have gone into our rooms. Hahaha...

I think we should continue to practice saving energy, not just switching off lights but putting in energy-saving bulbs in our lights and if you garden, make your own compost fertilizer. :-)

I support Earth Hour. Yes one person can't make a difference but alot of us will and people who thinks that switching off the lights for one hour will save the earth is getting the whole Earth Hour wrong. It is an awareness not a "Oh world will be saved if you switch it off tomorrow for one hour!"
Glad to see so many people voting earth.

    I vote Earth!

I will switch off whatever I don't need tomorrow. However, this 1 hour will not make much difference if no comprehensive action in long term to tackle global warming

Yet another cheap publicity stunt. Go check the houses of the organizers. They are probably the biggest culprits who leave their lights on 24/7, let their faucets leak, use the washing machine when there's only a bra or thong to wash.

Meanitme, i'll just go on the same on Sat. as any other day, juz trying to be mindful not to waste electricity, water, food etc.

In my opinion not being wasteful and saving up when possible is more effective than one hour of doing so.

What's the point of switching off lights but turn on the air-cond? ~.~

Earth Hour is not about conserving the environment; it's about raising awareness.

i am not so pessimistic. it is to spread a message, not to save an hrs worth of energy. i support this measure but i doubt Mrs BB will allow me to turn off the lights :) or anything else.

Hmm, I may support it by switching off the lights in my room tonight. Hmm... still not sure how to convince everyone in the house to support this Earth Hour event. Everyone may think that it's just some kind of joke. It's not easy to be a good person these days. Lots of people who are against. :( sadly..

Hi all, thanks for all your comments. I can see that most of you support the Earth Hour event.

I believe Earth Hour is an awareness event, not really saving electricity or conserve energy event. You can't save the Earth by turning off lights for one hour.

I think it will be a success if everyone is now more aware of global warming and commit to turn off unessential lights or electrical gadgets everyday.

Actually, it's not a matter or turning everything off, but only turn off what is not needed, meaning don't waste electricity unnecessarily.

Nowadays, it is so hot, I keep my fan on. It is essential to me. But if I'm not in the room, then I'll turn it off. That's what Earth Hour is all about to me : )
