My Favourite Cinema

During the Raya week, I went to watch 3 movies at GSC, 1 Utama. No, not all 3 in a row of course. It was more like 2 movies on one day and the third movie on another day.

I can’t even watch 2 movies in a row, don’t talk about 3! The one day when I watched 2 movies was not done one after another. Instead, I watched the first movie in the morning and the second one in the evening.

That’s why I don’t understand how some people could sit through the Lord Of The Rings marathon a few years back. This marathon involved watching Lord Of The Rings 1, 2 and 3 back to back with just a short break in between. It took about 10 hours to go through all 3 movies. Unless I can win a thousand ringgit or something, otherwise no thanks!

And if you are wondering why I watched all 3 movies at the same place, that is, GSC 1 Utama, well, it so happens that it is my favourite cinema. I think it is the best cinema in the whole of Malaysia. OK, I know I have not been to every cinema in Malaysia but surely they build the best cinemas in the Klang Valley region, no? I stand to be corrected of course.

All right, I admit it’s not fair to judge cinemas I’ve never been to, so I’ll just keep this comparison to cinemas in Klang Valley.

The three most famous and popular cinemas here are GSC (Golden Screen Cinemas), TGV (Tanjong Golden Village) and Cathay Cineplex.
I don’t know but I don’t go to TGV anymore – they look pretty old and outdated. In fact, TGV in KLCC felt a bit claustrophobic to me.

Cathay Cineplex is much better, but the only one I’ve been to is the one in Cineleisure, next to The Curve in Petaling Jaya. Even then, I somehow do not feel as comfortable there as compared to GSC.

And among all the GSC cinemas, I found that the one in 1Utama the best in terms of ambience, cleanliness, and seating. I dislike going to Summit GSC, it felt a bit rundown and creepy. It might be a good place to watch horror movies, though.

GSC at 1Utama (New Wing)

GSC Mid Valley is actually quite good, and I don’t mind going there if GSC in 1Utama is fully booked. Frankly speaking, I have never been to GSC at IOI Mall Puchong and Berjaya Times Square KL so no comments on them.

GSC Pavilion is one of the newest addition to the GSC family but it’s slightly more expensive than the other branches, not to mention that parking in Pavilion itself will burn a hole in your pocket!

Don’t even mention GSC Signature at The Gardens. At RM60 per seat (for the Gold Class) or RM20 (for Premier Class), I certainly can’t afford that! I really don’t need the complimentary drink and the blanket. About the blanket, I wonder if they change it for every customer or re-use it without cleaning. Covering yourself with a nice blanket in the cinema hall may feel cosy and warm until you start thinking what the previous user did with it!

I had initially started out this post with the intention to blog about the 3 movies I watched but look where I ended up! Oh well, I'll talk about the movies in my next post!

In the meantime, how about telling me which is your favourite cinema?

Been ages since I last went to a cinema. Back in my youthful years (hehehe) my favourite haunt was the one in Pertama Complex & The Odeon.
Then, it was GSC Mid Valley. The last movie I saaw there was Herbie, Fully Loaded. Ages ago!
Would love to have someone sponsor me to watch a movie in the Gold class. Hehehe

I love movies at the cinema :) But not a movie marathon...gosh that would be so tiring! I like MidValley the best..the Gardens is a tad over priced and I agree with you on the blankies...I am sure for an establishment like GSC, they must surely keep them clean.

honestly, i don't have any fave cinemas. i haven't been going to the theatre for quite sometime now.

Talking about the gold class seat at the GSC would definitely burn a hole in my pocket. besides, the blankets provided would obviously put me to zzzzzzzzz before the movie starts. :)

lina, that is really a long time ago! Gosh, I've never been to Pertama Complex or Odeon to watch a movie before. The one I've been to in the good old days is Rex Cinema at Jalan Sultan KL, which is THE place to watch movies in those days. Also during my school days, I usually went to Sentosa cinema in Section 17 PJ or Ruby cinema in SEA Park PJ and occasionally to PJ State cinema.
Those were the days where cinemas were dirty and full of rats! And not to mention, if someone taller sat in front of you, it's as good as not being able to watch the entire movie!

I don't mind if anyone want to sponsor me to watch a movie in Gold Class too : )

my bug life, yeah, I like MidValley GSC too. Watching movies at the cinema is highly enjoyable except sometimes I get irritated by people who talk on their handphones. Also have you been to a movie in the cinema where you can hear two people chatting about everything except the movie they are watching? I was like, if they wanted to chat, why watched the movie at all?

khengsiong, that's exactly what I'm afraid about! I just wonder if GSC Signature clean those blankets or simply re-use them after couples did whatever they did in those blankets : )

life ramblings, either you don't like to watch movies or you are watching pirated DVDs in your home. Haha!

Yes, watching Gold Class is too expensive. I rather spend the money on food. Haha!

The blankets won't put me to sleep cos I'll keep wondering what the previous user did with it! : )

Foong, I too feel the cineplex in KLCC a tad claustrophobic. Even the aisles leading to the halls seem like a maze. Not a nice feeling..

    Nice write-up and pictures.

I've watched 3 movies in a row before, no problme! LOL~

Well, in KL/PJ, I prefer GSC over TGV anytime. GSC 1-U is indeed a nice place to catch a movie.

However, in Ipoh (my hometown), TGV beats GSC hands down because the GSC there simply sucks - worse than any TGV you can find in Klang Valley, I suppose.

Cathay Cineleisure wins hands down, for comfortability. GSC & TGV attracts too many horny malays. LOL.

happysurfer, yes my thoughts exactly. I always felt claustrophobic at TGV KLCC so never go there anymore!

health nut wannabee mom, thanks! : )

day-dreamer, wow, you can watch 3 movies in a row? No idea how you do it! Really GSC in Ipoh that bad?

gallivanter, horny malays in TGV and GSC cinemas? Err, I don't know about that, but GSC still my No.1 cinema, but only the one in 1Utama : )

For me it's the matter of economics, painlessness and proximity, so it's 1U's TGV for me.

Wednesday rates are only RM6 relative to GSC's RM7. I guess you get what you paid for - the sound's a little off at times and the place IS a little old.

But as long as I don't have to wait too long in line to get that last minute ticket on Wednesdays, I don't care.

I don't go to Cineleisure or GSC if I can help it. (If free only go lah, right?)

bengbeng, a home cinema is good provided you don't have family members disturbing while watching your movies! : )

renaye, although it's convenient to watch movies at home, I prefer to watch certain movies in the cinema. It's a different feel and more enjoyable than watching it on TV.

    cbenc12, you like GSC 1Utama too! Give me a five! : )
I normally don't buy my tickets there, instead I booked them online and collect the tickets on the day I watch the movie. Or buy your tickets in the morning, no crowd at that time.

well, i don't know much about the cinemas there since i've only went for cinema once when i last visit. but here, we have very few choices. my selection is simple, as long as the sound system is good. without it, we can't get "into" the movie at all !!

I've been watching movies lately due to free movie passes from my sponsors. If I have to pay for the tickets I won't go. :P

Being a frugal person, i would rather spend the money on food for my kids or renting DVDs so the whole family can watch together.

eastcoastlife, renting DVD is definitely much cheaper than going to the cinema. But you are so lucky to receive free passes to cinema, I'm not so lucky. Anyway, who needs the cinema when you have a 60" LG HD Plasma TV? : )

You're absolutely right. I love GSC at 1 Utama the best. Location wise and the seats are perfect or near perfect although I do like GSC Premier at The Gardens. However one ticket there can easily get you 2 tickets at the normal GSC. Cineleisure not too bad though but 1Utama is easy and convenient. Now just hope everyone will not flood over to 1Utama after your post or I'll blame you!

pete, well, maybe it's time you step back into the cinema. Bring your whole family and after watching movie, you can go to enjoy your food and blog about it! : )

life ramblings, in that case, you should go watch at GSC Signature at The Gardens - less interruption there. And less people too so chances of people irritating you with their phone chats. But I guess watching at home may be more comfortable : )
